James Birrell is a Registered Landscape Architect, Urban Designer, Furniture Designer, company director, President of the Maroochydore Revitalisation Association and currently serves on the Sunshine Coast Light Rail Taskforce. James has worked on an extensive variety of projects throughout Australia and overseas with key involvement in urban master planning, environmental sustainability and contemporary design projects. 

In February 2012 James was appointed to the Sunshine Coast Light Rail Taskforce in recognition for his landscape urbanist approach to the town planning and urban design of a light rail system for the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast Light Rail proposal aims to reduce urban sprawl, protect valuable farmland, promote diversity in land use, reduce car dependency and improve our streetscapes and people places by reducing hard surfaces and expansive infrastructure. 

James’ flexibility in working at different scales has seen him work on many notable projects. He was the project director on Sveti Roc Golf Course in Croatia, Brisbane Road Hotel Redevelopment, Pavilions Resort Hope Island, Sunshine Beach Placemaking Master Plan and the Carisbrook Livestyle Village Northern Tasmania.
